In 231 AL Aurelia flared. It was not the star's death, only a spasm of it, but the Long Flare lasted eleven weeks and burned a fifth of the Aurelian Ring to slag. Millions died. The Throne, which had claimed for two centuries to rule by the star's grace, had no answer for why the star had turned on it. Over the next thirty years the Empire came apart.
The Academies left first. Imperial scholars had computed the triage the Throne was about to order: which Ring sections would be repaired and which abandoned, sorted by the rank of their inhabitants. They published the numbers, took the Ring's great computation arrays with them, and founded the Technocrat Union on the principle that the Throne had forfeited: that suffering should be minimised by arithmetic, not distributed by birth. Efficiency is mercy.
The Church broke next. Its most fervent orders declared that the Flare was judgment: that the Throne had grown unworthy of the Light, and that the Light demanded a cleansing. They took the pilgrim fleets and the cathedral-ships and became the Celestial Order, and they have been cleansing ever since.
The Legions stood. When the Throne recalled the Rim garrisons to defend the Ring, the legion commanders refused. They had been raised to hold the Rim against the dark, and they would not abandon it for a civil war. The Throne declared them traitors. The legions declared themselves the Iron Vanguard and have not taken a step back since. The line does not break.
One admiral chose another road. Lord Admiral Kade Varro, commanding the Throne's punitive fleet, discovered that he liked burning worlds more than he liked obeying the Throne. He took his fleet, and everyone willing to follow him, and went to war with everyone. His successors still sail under the red banner of the Crimson Fleet.
The Quiet Office simply walked away. It sold the Throne's secrets to every faction of the civil war, and when the war was over it owned a piece of all of them. The Shadow Brokerage has no territory and needs none. We already know.
The collapse threw millions of trained crews out of work. Deserters, discharged spacers and the survivors of broken units began to fly for whoever paid. They became the Freelancer companies. The Nomad Clans came in from the dark to trade, raid and salvage the wreckage of the Ring. And the Deep Space Explorers, sickened by the war, pushed their Farsight beacons out past the Rim to chart what lay beyond it.
What remained of the Solar Empire held the Ring and its light. It has never recovered its reach, and it has never forgiven anyone.
“The star did not abandon the Throne. The Throne abandoned the star.”
