Joy in the Fire

A warlord armada that mistook annihilation for art. The Crimson Fleet announces itself in saturation missile barrages and the wet crump of splash detonations, advancing behind slabs of cheap, defiant armor. Doctrine — Saturation Bombardment: heavy explosive, area-of-effect weapons and thick plating, traded against fragile shields. Overwhelm, encircle, detonate.

History

The Crimson Fleet was the Throne's punitive fleet, sent during the Sundering to burn rebellious worlds back into obedience. Its commander, Lord Admiral Kade Varro, found that he enjoyed the burning more than the obedience. He turned the fleet against the Throne, and then against everyone else.

Varro has been dead for a century and a half. His fleet has not noticed. It is a warlord armada ruled by whoever is strong enough to hold its flagship, and it fights in a single style: saturation missile barrages, splash detonations and cheap, thick armor, advancing until there is nothing left in front of it. It calls this art.

On the Tide

The Crimson Fleet regards the Tide as the only opponent in the Frontier worth its attention. That makes it the most eager ally Frontier Command has, and the least controllable.

Hull lineage

Crimson hulls are named for fire and its aftermath: Ember and Cinder for the raiders, Cataclysm battleships, and Ragnarok dreadnoughts.
