They took the Ring's great computation arrays with them and built a civilisation on a single principle: suffering is to be minimised by arithmetic.

The Union solved war like an equation. Every gram of mass in its ships is justified, every railgun round is an armor-cracking solution, every shield is phased to perfection. It is efficient, precise, and utterly without sentiment. Its enemies say that the Union's mercy is the coldest thing in the Frontier. The Union agrees, and considers that a compliment.
