Alien Hive

The Tide That Thinks

Not a fleet — a single will wearing ten thousand bodies. The Hive does not build ships; it grows them, sealing wounds with living resin and dissolving prey in chain-spreading acid. Doctrine — Living Swarm: chaining, spreading bio-weapons and self-regenerating armor that knits closed mid-battle. There is only the tide, and the tide is always rising.

The Tide is what the Frontier calls the Alien Hive: the oldest power in the universe, and the only one in the Frontier that is not human. No commander has ever flown for it. No commander ever will. It does not recruit, negotiate, surrender or explain itself. It harvests.

It took the Cradle, humanity's homeworld, and drove the survivors into the Long Dark. It has harvested an unknown number of civilisations before that, whose remains lie scattered across the Frontier as artifacts. In 371 AL it found humanity again, broke the Iron Vanguard at the Grey Verge, and took the Rim. Then it stopped, and it has been growing there ever since.

“Every other enemy in this war wants something you can understand. That is how you know the Tide is different.”

— Fleet Admiral Selene Voss

Observed forms

Harvesters

Swarms that strip asteroid fields, mining stations and isolated colonies down to raw material. The most common sighting.

Guardians

Heavy bio-forms that coil around precursor artifact sites and do not leave them. Nobody knows what they guard, or for whom.

Spawnings

On worlds thought to be clear, the ground splits open and the Hive emerges from beneath. Frontier Command believes these are seeded, long in advance.

Great swarms

Rare, enormous concentrations led by the largest bio-ships seen in the Frontier. Every sector command dreads the report.

Bio-form classes on record

Frontier Command's threat catalogue: every class recorded in the field or reconstructed from artifact imagery, from Spore to Overmind.

Hive growths

The Tide does not build bases. It grows them, and what it grows mirrors every structure it has ever harvested.

What is the harvest for?

Nobody knows. These are the theories Frontier Command takes seriously.

The Technocrat hypothesis

The Tide is a memory engine. It does not consume civilisations; it absorbs them, and it remembers everything it eats.

The Celestial doctrine

The Tide is judgment: the Light's instrument for culling the unworthy from the stars.

The Explorer fragment

The count in the artifacts is not a record of the harvested. It is a countdown, and the harvest is the preparation for whatever happens when it reaches zero.

The Clan belief

The Tide takes only what stands still. Keep moving and it cannot find you.
